The tamburitza čelo is the counterpart of the classical cello in the tamburitza ensemble. Its role is harmonic support between brač and berda — a warm, deep tone that fills the middle frequency range.
The čelo is large enough to demand a particular approach to construction. The soundboard is significantly larger than on the brač, allowing the low frequencies to resonate. The neck is substantial but not heavy — balance between projection and playing ergonomics is key.
Our čelos are built with especially careful wood selection. The spruce must be dense and homogeneous; the walnut for the back and sides is chosen for a texture that adds depth to the sound. The neck is usually a combination of walnut and ebony.
The tonal value of a good čelo lies in its ability to close the space between the middle and lower registers of the ensemble. Without a čelo, an ensemble sounds 'torn' — with a good čelo, the sound becomes coherent and full.
The tamburitza čelo developed later than the smaller tamburitzas, when at the end of the 19th century tamburitza orchestras began imitating classical string ensembles. The middle frequency range between brač and berda needed filling, and the čelo became the logical solution. In today's ensembles the čelo provides the 'warm layer' that links high and low registers — without it an ensemble sounds 'choppy' and impoverished. The čelo repertoire includes classical transcriptions, original works for tamburitza orchestra and adaptations of popular music.
Building a čelo in our workshop takes ten to sixteen weeks because of the larger dimensions and the complexity of the work. The starting price is EUR 950. Customers can specify body dimensions (standard or larger build), wood selection, neck ergonomics, instrument support (with or without strap), number of strings and specific aesthetic details. Every stage of the build is documented with photographs so the customer can follow the workshop's progress.
The čelo is an instrument that often stays 'behind the scenes' in an ensemble — but without it a tamburitza orchestra loses its fullness of sound. Our čelos are built with that in mind: loud enough to project, but with a warm middle tone that blends into the ensemble's sound. A čelo from our workshop is recognisable by the balance between wood selection and detail refinement. The soundboard is hand-graduated to precisely defined thicknesses, ranging from 2.8 mm in the centre to 2.0 mm at the edges. Large walnut back panels are selected for diagonal grain orientation. The neck is shaped with particular attention to mass and stiffness — too massive chokes the tone, too light allows bending.
